At the Subsix, the underwater space at PER AQUUM Niyama resort in the Maldives, visitors can feast with the fishes. Once billed as the world’s only underwater nightclub, Subsix is a now a restaurant and acts as an event space, revamped by Poole Associates. Its overhauled interior draws motivation from its sea-going surroundings and implants the marine aesthetic into each aspect of the design.
To reach Subsix, guests must take a speedboat 500 meters out to the ocean. Upon arriving, visitors descend a three-level staircase into the restaurant, as it is six meters below the waterline. It’s lit with unique light fixtures that copy white stars shimmering through the ocean’s surface, and they dwell among a large number of strands of capiz shells that wrap from the roof. This staggering component is reminiscent of the sea waves and adds a unimaginable textural component to the restaurant.
